The Importance of Cat & Dog Wellness Check ups

Routine wellness exams (or pet checkups) are key to helping your pet maintain their long-term physical health and wellbeing.

Combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, these pet annual exams include regular physical checkups to give your pet the best chance at excellent lifelong health.

When your pet is brought in for their regularly scheduled routine checkup, we are given a chance to prevent health issues from developing in your pet and treat them early before they progress into more serious health issues.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Pet Annual Exam in Ypsilanti

What to Expect During Your Pet Annual Exam in Ypsilanti

Our vet will give your cat or dog a comprehensive physical checkup in order to give them a complete picture of your pet's overall health and wellbeing. Pet annual exams at our animal hospital include all of the following elements:

General Condition

Your pet's behavior and general demeanor can be excellent clues for our vets as to your pet's overall health. The way your pet stands and walks, their weight when compared to their size and their general level of alertness can all be indicators of your companion's overall health.

Coat & Skin

We will check your pet's skin and coat for signs of problems, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff or abnormal hair loss or shedding.

Face & Head

Your pet's eyes, ears and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. We will also check the mouth for symptoms of oral health problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

Your pet's heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure and their pulse are all incredibly important clues to your pet's heart health. We will test all of these to ensure that they are normal. We will then examine their lungs for any evidence of abnormal breathing.

Heart rate and rhythm, pulse and blood pressure are vitally important to your pet's heart health. We'll test these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be examined for evidence of abnormal breathing.

Lymph nodes will be checked for pain or swelling, and we will also examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of discomfort.

Review of Findings

At the end of your pet's routine wellness exam, your vet will take the time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Kittens and puppies require proper medical attention throughout their first few weeks of life in order to get off to a healthy start.

We will provide your new family member with all the appropriate immunizations, deworming medication and a comprehensive pet wellness examination. We will also test them for intestinal parasites. We will provide you with a package of information and samples of products to help you provide the best care possible for your new pet.

Please never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits.

Once your pet's initial appointment is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots

Checkups for Senior Pets

With recent advances in veterinary medical knowledge and care, as well as newer therapies and better nutrition, senior pets are living longer than ever.

While this is excellent news for pets and their owners, it does mean that special attention must be given to their routine health care as your companion grows older. As your pet moves past their middle age, regularly scheduling routine exams becomes increasingly important to make sure they can remain healthy and happy throughout their golden years

In addition to the routine wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will give special attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

Additional laboratory tests may be recommended for aging pets to provide more detailed information about your senior pet's overall health and wellbeing.

Vaccinations & Prevention at Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital

During your pet's veterinary checkup at our Ypsilanti animal hospital, the vet will also check whether your animal requires preventive care, or if they are due for any routine vaccinations.
